The National Network of Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls stands in deep solidarity with the family and community of Kumanjayi White as coronial proceedings into his tragic passing commence this Thursday, 23 October, at the Local Court.
Before the hearing begins, Ned Jampijinpa Hargraves, Kumanjayi’s grandfather, will hold a press conference at 8:30am outside the Local Court. The family has invited supporters and community members to gather from 8:00am to show their love, strength, and support.
‘We hold Kumanjayi’s family and community in our thoughts and hearts as they continue their long and courageous pursuit of truth, accountability, and justice,’ said Debbie Kilroy. ‘Their grief is shared across communities who have long endured the violence of the state, communities who continue to mourn loved ones harmed by those acting under its authority,’ said Debbie Kilroy.
‘Now is the time for our communities to come together, to wrap around Kumanjayi’s family with love, solidarity, and strength. The coronial process is long and arduous, and the path toward justice can be heavy. We must stand alongside them every step of the way, ensuring they are not left to carry this burden alone,’ said Debbie Kilroy.
‘The National Network stands firmly behind the family and community, now and always. We join them in calling for a process grounded in truth-telling, respect, and justice – not only for Kumanjayi but for all Aboriginal people whose lives have been taken at the hands of the state,’ said Tabitha Lean.
